For automotive customers, KMC applies ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 and for other customer’s KMC applies ISO 9001 controls. Customer-specific requirements are review by the Sales and Quality Departments when received. IATF 16949 is built to exist on top of ISO 9001. Both standards have the same structure, with ISO 9001 providing the foundation. Essentially, IATF 16949 is simply a list of extra requirements that automotive suppliers must adhere to over and above the requirements of ISO 9001. IATF 16949 also requires 3rd party certification, and, since the standards are intertwined, most certification bodies will certify both at the same time. IATF 16949 was jointly developed by The International Automotive Task Force (IATF) members and submitted to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for approval and publication.

IATF 16949:2016 is the international technical specification and quality management standard for the automotive industry based on ISO 9001:2015. It was created to be used in conjunction with ISO 9001:2015, containing all of ISO 9001:2015 requirements with additional supplemental requirements specific to the automotive industry rather than being a stand-alone QMS. IATF 16949:2016 incorporates the structure and requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 quality management system standard with additional automotive customer-specific requirements.
